Page 4 The Shoreline September 2005 5 Vying for 3 Seats On PKS Town Board Continued From Page 1 Hunter, both of whom decided not to seek reelection. Kanyha has served the Town for a total of 14 years on its governing body, two of them as mayor. Hunter has been a commissioner for six years. Both plan to continue their interest in Town affairs and play an active role as needed. JOAN LAMSON Joan serves on the Carteret County Beach Commission, the County Transportation Committee, and was recently appointed to the Carteret County Economic Development Council. She serves on the Home Care and Hospice Advisory Board for Carteret General Hospital, and is a member of SCORE, the Service Corps of Retired Executives as a counselor for small businesses. She also is the past chairman of the Advisory Board of Sound Bank and a member of the board of Public Radio East. In addition, Joan is past chairman of the Carteret Community College Foundation, past president of the Arts Council of Carteret County and was a member of the board of the Chamber of Commerce. She served as chairman of the County-Wide Comprehensive Plan Committee and vice chair of the Emergency Services Advisory Council. She earned her MBA at Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, and is a Fellow of the Institute of Political Leadership at UNC. Joan recently graduated from Leadership North Carolina, and was a member of Leadership Carteret in 1996. She has also completed the course work for the Certificate in Non-profit Management from Duke University. She is a member of Rotary and the First Presbyterian Church. Lamson has lived in Pine Knoll Shores since 1994, and has been a property owner since 1983. She previously lived in Cleveland, Ohio where she was the founder and owner of a small metal finishing firm, Castite Systems, Inc., for 20 years. Joan is widowed and has three children and three stepchildren. There are no w 16 grandchildren and five great-grands. BOB KIHLSTROM Bob holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in chemical engineering from Case'Institute of Technology in Cleveland, Ohio and spent a long career supervising design and construction of instrumentation and control systems for petroleum refineries, chemical and nuclear power plants, industrial/marine boiler systems and water/waste treatment plants. He worked for some of the nation’s largest corporations, including General Electric as a senior systems and application engineer and E.I. Dupont De Nemours & Co. He served as a principal engineer and project engineer for Morrison Knudsen and as a lead engineer and engineering manager for Davy McKee Corp. A boating enthusiast. Bob has lived and worked around water most of his life. The son of a chief engineer on Great Lakes ore boats. Bob was bom in Sault Ste. Marie between Lakes Huron and Superior. He grew up in Ashtabula, Ohio on Lake Erie. When it came to retiring, the proximity of Pine Knoll Shores to water made it his first choice. Wishing to keep busy after establishing his retirement home here. Bob has put his engineering expertise to work as a parttime maintenance man for the Town. Ten years ago when he returned to Ashtabula for a high school reunion Bob renewed his acquaintance with a grade school classmate, Laurena Fraser, who became his wife. Between their combined families they count nine children living in Connecticut, Arizona and a lot of places in between. JAY KOCHER Bom and raised in Greenwich, Conn., Jay spent two years in the Army during the Korean War, assigned to the Finance and Accounting Branch. After being discharged, he joined Southem New England Telephone in New Haven and was exposed to many facets of management during his 31 years of service with the organization. He was serving as District Plant Manager upon his retirement in 1986. On retirement, he and his wife, Maureen, purchased a 45-acre hay farm in Sharon Springs, N. Y. They found the country beautiful but the winters devastating. The winter they decided a warmer climate would be welcome, 186 inches of snow fell in Sharon Springs. After vacationing in this area in 1994, they rented a home in Pine Knoll Shores to experience the climate. Finding that Pine Knoll Shores was everything they hoped it would be, including being located midway between the homes of their two children, they sold the farm and moved here. Their daughter, Kim, lives in Boca Raton, FI, and has two children, a boy and a girl. Their son, Robert, who has three girls, lives in Redding, Conn. Since relocating here. Jay has volunteered with the Coast Guard Auxiliary as Finance and Public Education Officer and assisted at Martha’s Mission and the Senior Citizen Center in Morehead City. He has served Pine Knoll Homeowners Assn. for six years, four as director of waterways and two as president. For the past two years he has been chairman of the Town’s Land Use Plan Committee and Disaster Infonnation Coordinator for the Town ’ s Emergency Management Group. This spring he joined the Town’s new Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). LARRY LA BRIE A native of Baltimore, Larry grew up in Washington, D.C. and Rye, N.Y. He took a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Wesleyan University in 1956, and an LLB from the University of Michigan Law School in 1959. After serving for two periods of active duty in the U. S. Army Reserve Program, he took a Master of Laws Degree from the New York University Law School in 1973. He started his law career as an associate attorney with a Manhattan law firm. A member of the New York Bar since 1960, he later was admitted to practice in Kentucky and Ohio. He served as senior attorney for two corporations, and as a vice president and corporate counsel for an international engineering corporation that designed and constmcted petrochemical and petroleum refineries around the world. He spent the last 20 years of his career working for Ashland Oil (currently Ashland Inc) in Ashland, Ky„ serving as Associate General Counsel of its Petroleum Division and finally as Corporate Assistant General Counsel. He and his wife, Beth, after vacationing on the Outer Banks for a number of years, decided that Pine Knoll Shores was developing as a community sensitive to the needs of seniors. They purchased a lot in PKS in 1972 in anticipation of retirement. They began designing and building their home here in 1993 and moved in upon Larry’s retirement in 1995. They have three children and three grandchildren. Larry has served on the board of the Bogue Banks Beach Preservation Assn. and for a number of years was active as a tutor and member of the board of directors of Carteret Literacy Council. He has also been active as a leader in Boy Scouts of America programs and has served as a chairperson/clerk of the goveming boards of three churches in different communities where the family has lived. He also saw service as a director of one of the largest credit unions in Kentucky. TED LINDBLAD Ted, who grew up on New York’s Long Island, holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in engineering electronics from Hofstra University and studied Communication Technology at the RCA Institutes in New York City. After serving four years in the Navy, he spent his entire working career (some 33 years) with Grumman Aerospace Corp., holding a variety of positions from lab technician to logistics program manager. In his last seven years at Gmmman he served as Assistant Vice President for Logistics, managing a department of nearly 2,0(X) people. He and his wife, Marilyn, moved to Pine Knoll Shores in 1992 upon Ted’s retirement. Since then, both have been active as volunteers. Ted was a member of the T own’s Emergency Management Group for nearly eight years, serving as chief of the organization. He served on the Town Planning Board and for two years was vice chairman of the board. For many years he was a director of the Bogue Banks Beach Preservation Assn. and currently represents PKS on the Carteret County Beach Commission.. Ted served a three-year term as a member of the Bogue Banks Country Club Board of Directors, and was club president for one of those years. He is currently a member of the Town’s new Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), serving as Team Leader of the group. BONNIE JEAN (BJ) PETER A native of Louisiana, Bonnie Jean took a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1969 from the Louisiana State University School of Business and her Juris Doctor in 1974 from Wake Forest University School of Law. She has been a member of the North Carolina Bar since 1974. Immediately after law school, she conducted a small private commercial law practice in Charlotte and for seven years served as counsel for Midlantic Banks Inc., a regional bank holding company. In this period she also served as an adjunct professor at Seton Hall University’s W. Stillman School of Business and later taught business law and the Uniform Commercial Code to both graduate and undergraduate students at Fairleigh Dickinson University School of Business. In 1983 she served as a member of the American Bar Association’s editorial team, researching and drafting two chapters of the ABA Term Loan Handbook. In 1984 she joined AT&T as Corporate Counsel with responsibilities that included legal support for AT&T spin-offs Lucent Technologies Inc. and Avaya Inc. After her retirement from AT&T in 2001 she continued for a time to serve Lucent Technologies as a contract attorney and has taught business law at Campbell University and Aviation Law for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Since 2003 she has been the member-manager of BJ Insurance Enterprises, L.L.C. working as an independent agent marketing AFLAC supplemental insurance products. A licensed insurance agent in North Carolina, she is a member of the Carteret County Chamber of Commerce, the Down East Business Assn., the Emerald Isle Business Assn., the Crystal Coast Republican Women, and Pine Knoll Shores Garden Club. She has two adult children, a son in Colorado and a daughter who is married to an Army major presently stationed in Europe.
